This Island is the biggest island made entirely of sand in the world and is a world heritage site. It is roughly midway down the east coast of the county and can be accessed from Brisbane 300 km to the south or from any area if you are taking a holiday on the Sunshine Coast. The climate in the region is temperate and stays warm and sunny for most of the year making is a perfect holiday destination.
To get to the island you will need to cross Hervey Bay and this is where a lot of humpbacks will pass on their yearly migration. You will be able to take on some of the best whale watching here at the right time of year and see the most playful of whales in their natural habitat.
When you reach the island you will be able to stay at one of many great hotels set up there and find out about all of the options to see as much as you can. You may feel like taking a flight over the island. You can do this by taking off from the 70 km stretch of beach along the south west coast and this will surely be a highlight of your trip.
If you would rather keep your feet on the ground then you are able to do a few options. One is to go on a guided tour on one of the off-road buses that will take a group around the island for a few hours, stopping at a few of the main hot-spots. Better, yet, if you are a keen driver then you can rent out your own four by four and explore the island at your own leisure.
