What is the cheapest way to travel around Great Britain by rail?

I’m planning a trip around Great Britain (England, Scotland and possibly Wales) in September and I was wondering about all these options.

What is cheaper: paying for each ride one at a time or buying a Flexipass?
What’s the difference between a Consecutive Pass and a Flexipass?
Can I buy these passes at any rail station? Can I buy them at Stansted, where the airport is?
Are you able to travel with all rail companies if you have a Flexipass?
Is it possible to buy these passes in advance and can they be sent to Slovenia, where I come from?
And of course, can I buy any of these at all since I come from Slovenia?
*Keep in mind when answering the questions that I am not from UK

I know it’s a lot of questions but I have to know these things so I can calculate an approximate cost of travel. I’d really appreciate if you guys answer any of these. Thx

The passes you refer to (flexipass and consecutive pass) are rail passes sold by BritRail, a company which only sells rail tickets to foreign tourists. The difference between the two passes are that a flexipass allows you a certain number of days of travel, spread out over 2 months. A consecutive pass lets you travel for a number of days with no gaps between each day. You cannot buy those passes at a station or airport, they must be bought in advance online. In my opinion you shouldn’t use these passes. Using them is complicated and it’s not what the locals do.

People from the UK don’t use the rail passes you refer to. People from the UK buy their tickets through the National Rail system, either at a train station or on the internet at www.thetrainline.com. If you book each journey you want to make enough time in advance you can get very cheap tickets.

[EDIT] If you are going for the option I have recommended (not buying a BritRail pass, buying tickets through the national rail system instead), you should definitely get yourselves young persons railcards. Is rail travel in Europe a viable alternative to flying?

I am considering a holiday in Spain (travelling from UK). These days, flying is a lot of hassle, what with the increase in security, and baggage restrictions. Would anyone recommend rail travel over air travel? Is travelling 1st class worth the extra money?

Train travel is definitely worthwhile both environmentally and as a means of enjoying the journey. This is the BEST website for train travel in Europe. Enjoy!
